Understanding Your Options

Inpatient vs. Residential Mental Health Treatment: What’s the Difference?

The terms “inpatient” and “residential” are often used interchangeably, but they describe different levels of care. Knowing the difference can help you find the right place faster.

Trillium Wellness is a residential program. Many of our residents come to us after a hospital stay, when they’re safe but not yet ready to go home, or after outpatient care hasn’t been enough. If you or a loved one is in immediate danger, please call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline first; our admissions team can help plan next steps once you’re safe.

What We Offer

Compassionate Care for Adults Facing Serious Mental Health Challenges

Trillium provides residential mental health treatment for adults navigating conditions such as:

Our Approach

Clinical Care, Rooted in Nature

Our program is guided by three principles, represented by the three petals of the trillium flower: Restore, Reconnect, and Renew.

Restore

Clinical stabilization through individual and group therapy, psychiatric medication management, and brain mapping to support more precise, individualized treatment planning.

Reconnect

Rebuilding connection to self, to loved ones, and to the natural world through nature therapy, animal-assisted therapy for trauma with a veteran-run therapy dog program, and experiential work.

Renew

Building the resilience, coping tools, and sense of purpose residents carry home to Ohio, supported by relapse prevention and aftercare planning.

Planning Your Stay

Getting to Trillium from Ohio

Trillium is located just outside Knoxville, Tennessee, a straightforward trip down the I-75 corridor for families in Cincinnati, Dayton, and southwestern Ohio. Families from Columbus, Toledo, Cleveland, and the rest of the state can fly into McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS), a short drive from our campus.

We know distance can feel like a barrier, especially for families who want to stay involved. Our team works with you to:

  • Coordinate arrival and admission logistics
  • Keep family members informed and involved throughout treatment, with your loved one’s consent
  • Plan a discharge and aftercare path that connects your loved one with ongoing support back home in Ohio

Be Prepared

A Note on Detox

Trillium does not provide medical detox on-site. If detox is needed before residential treatment, we coordinate with trusted partners to arrange a safe transition into our program once your loved one is medically stable.

Using Your Insurance Across State Lines

Coverage for out-of-state treatment depends on your specific plan. Some plans cover care outside Ohio; others have network restrictions. The fastest way to know is to verify your insurance with our team. We’ll review your benefits and explain your options clearly before you make any decisions.

What Sets Us Apart

Why Ohio Families Choose Trillium

01 — We take the clients others turn away. High-acuity care is our focus, not our exception.

02 — Small by design. Sixteen beds means a hands-on clinical director and a team with time to understand each person’s full story.

03 — Locally owned, not corporate. Trillium is owned and led by people from our East Tennessee community.

04 — Offerings you won’t find everywhere. Sound bowl healing, a veteran-run therapy dog partnership, and structured nature therapy.

05 — A partner in academic excellence. We work alongside the University of Tennessee’s social work program, known for its focus on farm- and nature-based therapy.
